Casey Shaw is an experienced Film Lecturer and Creative Producer based in West Yorkshire & Greater Manchester.

 

As co-owner of the independent production company, Idle Work Factory - her work aims to serve authentic, northern stories for international audiences and provide sustainable training for emerging talent in the Screen Industries.

In 2022, Casey produced a slate of three short films with Channel 4 including Jordon Scott Kennedy’s Youthless, which is now been officially optioned for a TV series with Rollem Productions and Charles Humphreys innovative, animated Blood from a Stone (Selected by the Netflix backed BFI Future Film Festival 2024)

 

Casey later collaborated as Associate Producer on Jack King’s BFI backed Predators, which premiered at BFI London International Film Festival in October '23 and led production on BFI Network director, Jo Lane's Gobstopper, which premiered at the BIFA-selected Manchester International Film Festival '24.

Casey is mentored by Head of Channel 4 Drama, Caroline Hollick - It’s a Sin (2021) and the BAFTA winning Help (2021) and recognised as part of Screen Yorkshire's NEXT LEVEL talent programme.

In October 2023, Casey worked with Cosmic Cat and StudioCanal as Community Engagement Coordinator surrounding the release of Ken Loach’s The Old Oak (2023) and joined the BFI x Film Hub North's Creative Producers Lab cohort, led by producers Roxy McKenna and Radha Bhandari (Public Dreams Ltd).

Idle Work Factory’s debut feature Suicide Kelly (2023) written & directed by Jordon Scott Kennedy received the Best Picture Award from the BAFTA-accredited British Urban Film Festival and a BIFA Breakthrough nomination for lead, Freddy Smith's performance.

 

Casey is currently developing a BFI-backed short, set to shoot in May 2024 and has an exciting slate of projects in development with writers & directors from across the UK.

Casey is Deputy Programme Leader for BA Film Production at the award-winning Met Film School and regularly collaborates with the BFI, Screen Yorkshire, Channel 4, FilmHub North, SIGN and The Unit, Bradford.

Critical film studies of film theory, history and culture with applied practice. Working in close collaboration with cultural partners including HOME, Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology and North West Film Archive.

2014 - 2016

PGCE Lifelong Learning

Huddersfield University

Post-graduate certificate in Lifelong Learning for teaching and learning of film theory and practice in Further and Higher Education. Throughout my research, I developed inclusive filmmaking tools for people with complex emotional and behavioural difficulties which are now utilised in institutions and recognised as part of the National Autistic Society.

Creative Producers Lab '23
BFI x Film Hub North

Creative Producer Lab aims to answer that question by developing the next generation of producing talent in the North & Midlands.Selected as one of six emerging producer from the North, the six-week training programme lead by Film Hub North, covered topics such as producing fundamentals, building a slate, budgeting and scheduling, pre-production, shooting, post-production, casting and distribution.

NEXT LEVEL
Screen Yorkshire

Next LEVEL is a programme led by Screen Yorkshire & Game Republic, designed to support mid-level screen practitioners to progress into Senior Roles. Training covered finance, budgeting, legal, management, HR, sustainability and an introduction to Virtual Production techniques. As part of the industry training, I was matched with award-winning Producer, Hugh Mann Adamson of ENON Films.

Filmmaker 25
Under the Moon

The FilmMakers 25 project is funded by Bradford Metropolitan District Council and Bradford2025 in association with Under the Moon Ltd. The training, led by Ruth Pitt placed focus on Industry Mentorship and allowed Casey the opportunity to begin Mentorship with Producer & Head of Channel 4 Drama, Caroline Hollick.

BAFTA’s Albert is an industry consortium that is leading a charge against climate change, bringing the screen industries together to tackle their environmental impact and to inspire audiences to act for a sustainable future. This course covered climate science, sustainable production and climate content.

Screen Skills

An intensive one-day training, provided by Screen Skills & First Option Safety Group - as part of the Production Safety Passport programme.A broad overview of the risk management issues to be considered on location during the making of programmes, including hazard identification, risk assessment and good health and safety management. Includes emergency procedures and legalities.

Inclusive Leadership & Management
SIGN x University of York

As part of a collaboration between Idle Work Factory & SIGN, Casey took part in a three-day training programme with Alex Firmin at The University of YorkThe short-course provided comprehensive training, in inclusive and positive leadership - combining innovation with proven techniques to provide creative, successful solutions.
